About Sanxiantai Conservation Area

Sanxiantai Conservation Area is located on Taiwan's southeast coast in Taitung County and encompasses rugged coastal landscapes shaped by dramatic volcanic rock formations, tidal pools, and diverse marine habitats. The name Sanxiantai means "Terrace of the Three Immortals," referring to three large offshore rock formations steeped in local legend. The area is best known for its iconic 300-meter-long eight-arched footbridge that gracefully connects the mainland to Sanxiantai Island, allowing visitors to explore the island’s unique ecosystem. The conservation area protects coastal vegetation, including rare species of ferns and orchids, as well as marine life found in the tidal pools and shallow waters. Birdwatchers may spot migratory species and coastal birds that frequent the region. Hiking along well-maintained trails and exploring the rock formations at low tide offer excellent opportunities for photography and naturalist study. The site’s cultural history is reflected in local legends about immortals and fishermen's traditions. Sanxiantai is a popular destination for both Taiwanese and international travelers seeking immersive coastal scenery, ecological diversity, and leisurely walks in an unspoiled natural setting. Facilities are basic but include visitor walkways, information signage, and parking areas along Provincial Highway 11. The area’s moderate climate allows for year-round visitation, with spring and fall being especially pleasant. As a protected conservation area, efforts focus on preserving its fragile coastal environment and fostering sustainable tourism.
